It already seemed like Gregg Popovich had done everything in San Antonio a coach could do, leading the Spurs to five NBA championships and establishing a standard of excellence envied throughout NBA.
But Popovich reached an impressive milestone Saturday night in the Spurs’ 121-97 win over the Nuggets. It marked Popovich’s 1,128th victory as an NBA coach, breaking former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan’s mark for the most wins by an NBA coach with one franchise.

Don Nelson holds the all-time record for NBA coaching wins, with 1,335, followed by Lenny Wilkins (1,332), Sloan (1,221), Pat Riley (1,210), George Karl (1,175) and Phil Jackson (1,155). It’s not out of the question that Popovich could break the record, if he can hang around a few more seasons.
